On Saturday, we joined many of our friends to honor a true legend in the Fire Service, Donald Wilkins. Much has been said about him, especially yesterday, but he is the best example of dedication to duty, and to his craft. There were few, if any, in attendance at yesterday’s ceremony that have not benefited from his presence in their lives. The award of the Order of the Palmetto by the State of South Carolina is a fitting tribute to a much deserving man.
I came to know Don over fifty years ago and he has always been a great advisor, mentor, and friend to me. In recent years, I have relived some of my earlier memories of our lives together as he taught classes in our classroom at our headquarters right outside aside my office door.
It is easy to say thank you for taking care of our firefighters to Don and his wife, Pam, and know that your influence is felt throughout the community.
I was also pleased to get a photo of him giving me advice again yesterday! I will cherish it for years to come.
