Many of you have seen the sign in front of our Team office, near the roadway on Dorchester Road. This sign has been there since the station was built many years ago. When we moved into the station in 2013, the sign had not been used for some time. We decided to clean it up, rewire it, paint it, and replace the graphics to make it usable again. Thanks to our amazing friends at Signs ASAP, Inc. on Trolley Road in Summerville, we launched our plan to bring it back to life.
Our plan has always been to try to put a new message on the sign each week, usually on Monday. The messages are intended to be humorous, thought-provoking, heartfelt, brain tickling, reverent, or mindful that we all have a story, each captured in our hearts and souls. I would be less than honest if I didn’t tell you that it really makes our day when we someone acknowledges our work. Sometimes it just the honk of someone’s horn when they pass by or the ones who stop to find out more of the sign’s history. Occasionally, we will hear from the Fire Chief’s office who has been contacted by a citizen to express their satisfaction with the message. We really get excited when someone stops to ask about the sign’s origin and we tell its story.
We find the quotes in a lot of places, (Google is very helpful) and we encourage others to share with us if they would like to contribute their thoughts. When we started this project, little did we know we would have posted over 570 messages since we began. If you have one, send it to info@firefightersupport.org and we will share it.
And last by not least, stop by and visit when we are there. We would love to have a photo made with you!
Pictured here is a kind lady who stopped by recently to express her thanks for the sign. She showed me a folder in her cell phone where she stops and takes photos of the sign to share with her friends and family. Thank you so much for your interest!
