Tonight, we join countless others in mourning the loss of a friend and a legend in the community.
Butch Barfield, the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the City of North Charleston passed this morning after a long battle with cancer. Butch also served in many positions in the City of North Charleston including a firefighter and a police officer. He is also an icon as a coach in the athletic programs in the City.
Butch is leaving us way too early, but he truly made his mark during his time on this earth. The Good Lord has gained a heavenly servant. Many of us, including myself, came to know Butch many years ago when we thought we had him captured in the fire department. But the call of serving his community best drew him into law enforcement where he served admirably. Butch was a good man and a wonderful husband and father. And, to us, he was a good friend, always willing to stop to talk or to help you in any way. Even though he was much younger than me, I always thought of how I wished I had grown up to be like him.
Rest easy, my friend until we met again. Our most heartfelt go to Laurie and Brent, to his family, and his friends, both personal and professional.
