Posted on Facebook six years ago upon learning of the death of Boston firefighters, Lt. Edward Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy. Rest in peace Brothers:
My friends, it is difficult to express how I feel right now. The loss of two Boston firefighters today reminds me of how dangerous this firefighting business can be. But, just as importantly, it reminds me of just how fragile life can be. I think of all the times over the years we probably cheated death, and with a little luck and a lot more grace from the Good Lord, we escaped by the seat of our pants.
Today’s events remind me of those times I led others into the fight, and they followed because they trusted me. I sat with an old friend as we reminisced about those days and I shudder of the thought of that responsibility today. Throughout the Fire Service, many young brothers and sisters are getting their start, others are hitting their stride and some are looking to complete their careers. Regardless, when the tones drop you are all exposed to the uncertainty you face with each call. Each time you are required to make split-second decisions, sometimes with limited information to get the job done. There have never been more “tools” available to you to narrow that gap of uncertainty.
Study your procedures, learn something new about your equipment each shift, share your experience and knowledge with the newer firefighters, and remember the ones that made a difference in your life when you first started and work to be like them. And, honor the memories of our lost Boston brothers by taking care of yourselves and the ones around you out there!!
