Today was a special day in the history of the Charleston Fire Department as we joined our brothers and sisters of the CFD and many others to welcome Chief Dan Curia as our new Chief at his swearing-in ceremony. Chief Curia comes to us from the Durham, North Carolina Fire Department after serving twenty-eight years there before retiring as their Chief.
This is a day long-awaited by us as the CFD holds a special place in our hearts. Our Team began in the Charleston Fire Department in 2007 after the tragic loss of the Charleston 9 in the Sofa Super Store fire. The counseling program, originally known as the Charleston Firefighter Support Team, has grown substantially to become the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team, to include the Lowcountry EMS Support Team and the 911 Telecommunicators Support Team to serve the entire coastal region of our State.
Part of Chief Curia’s vision for the department includes a comprehensive behavioral health program to support his firefighters and their families. We are honored to be included in providing those services and look forward to the future with the department.
