On Monday last, we observed the 11th anniversary of the loss of our nine Charleston firefighters in the Sofa Super Store fire. Much has transpired over the last eleven years including the retirement of many of CFD brothers or many others simply leaving the department. As I looked around at those in attendance at the Memorial, I couldn’t help but think of all our firefighters who have given so much to the CFD to make it what it is today.
The solemn reading of all the other names of the CFD members who have died in the line of duty gave a special meaning to this year’s Memorial as it reminded of the others that have given the ultimate sacrifice since the beginning of the department.
I couldn’t help but wonder what the 9 would say of the others that joined them last night in our memories and I’m sure they would be proud to have their brothers become a part of the legacy of the Charleston Fire Department. They would also be proud of their brothers and sisters who continue to carry out the mission of a great department.
Many folks have watched from the sidelines in the last eleven years depending on news stories, “expert” evaluations, or critiques that judged an organization suffering from tragedy. Then, there are many of us who have witnessed the recovery of this great organization. Regardless of those who were naysayers, who wrote a critical report, or offered their opinions, the men and women of the Charleston Fire Department have risen to the challenges with amazing resiliency to move into the future.
Take care of each other….
Gerald
