Yesterday, I was sitting quietly while taking a ride down memory lane. It’s a method I have learned from my clinician who helps me often. I was thinking about the people who have helped shape my life. Obviously, I think of my parents who always provided for me and my brother and sisters. But yesterday, things were different as I thought more about my adult life and the Fire Service. One person came to mind. Clara Williams was our fire department’s Administrative Assistant, more often called the “Chief’s Secretary” back then. This photo is of Clara many years ago and I apologize for the quality. Clara took care of all our needs more like a Mom than a co-worker. I am not so sure she was not the one that contributed to the adage of “do you want to talk to the man is charge or the woman who knows what’s going on?” Any time we had a question about the department we could go to Clara to get it “Clarafied”. Clara passed on some years ago now, but I think of her often. I realize that there are so many of these women who have helped shape the careers of many of us. As I scanned the channels of my old brain, there are many of you that came to mind. I apologize that there are others that I may have not listed, and that titles differ with each organization. I also concede that many of you do far more than an Administrative Assistant so please forgive me if I do not have your title correct. We would like to thank the following for all you do or have done. None of us could get along without your love and support:Clara Williams, North Charleston District Fire Dept. (Rest in Peace)
Terri Chadwick, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department (Rest in Peace)
Willie Duren, St. Andrews Department (Rest in Peace)
Traci Hessler, Georgetown County Fire /EMS (Rest in Peace)
Janene Schmidt, Pine Ridge Fire Department
Audrey Holzhausen, Old Fort Fire Department
Louise Franklin, C & B Fire Department
Karen Bosart, North Charleston Fire Department
Marcella Chambers, Goose Creek Rural Fire Department
Lisa Tucker, Dorchester County Fire Rescue
Ella Knox, Summerville Fire & Rescue
Pam Blevins, St. Paul’s Fire Department
Amy Skidmore, Georgetown City Fire Department
Sandy Martin, Conway Fire Department
Debbie Altman, South Lynches Fire District
So, next time any of our firefighters stop by the “office”, poke your head in and tell them how much you appreciate them. And, when you are old and gray like me, hopefully you will realize how much they really meant to you. Gerald
