Tonight, we attended the City of Charleston Council meeting as Mayor Joseph Tecklenburg issued a proclamation declaring Thursday, May 11, 2023 as “Assistant Chief Raymond Lloyd Day” in the City of Charleston. Chief Lloyd retired from the CFD on January 3, 2018, after nearly 45 years of service to the city. After retirement, he joined the Folly Beach Department of Public Safety where he continues to serve.

Thursday, May 11, 2023, will mark the 50th anniversary of when Chief Lloyd joined the Charleston Fire Department. On this day he will return to the Charleston Fire Department to receive the title of Honorary Fire Chief and will speak with CFD members about the history of the department. He will serve for eight hours at the salary he began with 50 years ago, $ 1.78 per hour, before ending his shift for the last time.  I’m not sure “the last time” is appropriate as I’m sure he will continue to be an integral part of the CFD for years to come. Even with his first retirement in 2018, he has always been a dedicated visitor at the stations, has participated in multiple CFD functions and events, training as a peer team member on the CFD Peer Team, and serving on the Board of Directors as Vice President of our team, the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team.

Chief Lloyd stands as an amazing example of a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, Fire Chief, mentor, friend, and of what we all should strive to be. Thank you, Sir, for your commitment and dedication to the CFD, the community, and to the Fire Service!
