The past three weeks have been especially troubling for our first responders. As I think about all that has transpired in that brief time, it is amazing to witness the resiliency of those who serve our communities. It is difficult enough to maneuver the continuing effects of the pandemic but, this week has had multiple tragedies involving friends and children.

Now, many will say it is part of the job, do not let it bother you, or “suck it up.”   Well, in true sense, it is a part of the job and unfortunately, it will continue to be. But there cannot be any expectations that it does not bother you because if it did not, we would really be concerned for you. But, most importantly, you cannot be expected to “suck it up”! Suck it up where? Where does it go if you just try to ignore it? It goes into your heart, your soul, and in your brain to visit you again when you least expect it. It may be a nightmare or a flashback or it may be a sound, a smell, or a sight of something that rocks your world.

Well damn, what are you supposed to do? Learn the methods of processing those memories, TALK to someone, a family member, a trusted friend, a peer team member, a chaplain, or a clinician trained to assist you. We all together have one of the most comprehensive programs ever in our State. I began my career in 1967 when you never let anyone know you were having trouble. I know hundreds of my fellow first responders who have suffered as well. We are the ones that ignored our feelings, would pace around in the parking lot of the firehouse, or get in the firehouse shower and just cry to rid ourselves of it.

And to our young firefighters, EMTs/paramedics, law enforcement officers, and telecommunicators, the program, the care, and the help for you is within your reach. REMEMBER, it is not just about the bad calls. You may be affected by personal problems, financial difficulties, being a parent or a spouse, raising your children, alcohol or substance abuse, depression, anxiety, or physical sickness. Our major goal is to provide a program to support you until, and after, you retire. We are committed to taking care of you and your family. We have not fulfilled our commitment to you if you are not willing to take care of those who take care of you at home. It costs nothing to make the call. Anytime, any day, 843-609-8300.  Gerald
